Eulogy read at John's funeral

Created by Janet 14 years ago
John was born in Kensington, London in 1936 and moved to Greenford, Middlesex where he lived until he got married in 1961. His parents’ names were Dorcas and William and he had a brother, Roger, who sadly died at the age of 36. After finishing his national service in the Coldstream Guards John worked for Thomas Cook Travel as a Foreign Exchange Cashier at several of their branches and then on the cruise ships where he visited many countries. After this he went into an international banking career working in the City of London for several major banks. Then he transferred into computing and finally set up his own “head hunting” business working in the IT industry. He married Janet in 1961 in the Catholic Church in Bushey, Hertfordshire; much to the disappointment of the local Catholic priest who said “couldn’t you have found a nice Catholic boy Janet”. Undeterred by this remark the marriage went ahead and in fact the priest attended their wedding reception. Janet and John would have been celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary next year having been married 49 years this coming October, Janet and John have 3 children, a son Daren who is now living in Spain and twin daughters, Nicola and Marianne, residing in England. Unfortunately Nicola is unable to be with her father today as she is expecting a baby in the next few weeks and unable to fly. Janet and John also have a grandson, Evan, and two granddaughters, Tia and Kiya who spend much of their summer holidays with their grandparents in Camposol and great fun is had by all. Prior to moving to Spain in the year 2000, Janet and John lived in Northwood, Middlesex for a number of years and previous to that Pinner. When they eventually decided to take the plunge and move to Mazarron everybody said how brave they were but 10 years on they still remain very happy. When the children were growing up most weekends were either spent on the beach at Bracklesham Bay, Sussex, or water ski-ing on their boat which they towed behind their car up to Sandy in Bedfordshire where they belonged to a ski club. They had great fun with this ending up at the Little Chef before commencing their homeward journey. The end of this chapter came about when the children decided they wanted to go on to other things and were not too keen on cleaning the boat and equipment at the end of the day! A couple of John’s favourite things had to be his clothes and collection of watches and in fact he had a larger and more diverse wardrobe than Janet. He even wore a handkerchief in his top pocket of his pyjamas and his favourite collection of sweets! John was certainly a character, funny, clever and sometimes on occasions grumpy but most of all a great dad/husband/granddad and we will never forget him.
